Polysorbate 20, TWEEN 20
TW20 V (Vegetable)
CAS # 9005-65-5, MW 1227.54
Our Polysorbate 20 (PS20V) is a vegetable based product made according to GMP and NF standards. It is useful in vegan Kosher and Halal applications.
Polysorbate 20 is a multi-functional ionic hydrophilic surfactant often blended with Sorbitans such as SPAN 20, SPAN 60 or SPAN 80 (non-ionic lipophilic surfactants) to achieve optimal HLB values.
In general, Polysorbates or Tweens are ionic hydrophilic surfactants used as emulsifying agents in the preparation of vaccines, creams and ointments for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and in food products.

Polysorbates are a group of nonionic surfactants commonly used in biological research and the food industry due to their versatile properties. They are derived from polyoxyethylene sorbitan esters and are available in different formulations, such as Polysorbate 20, Polysorbate 40, Polysorbate 60, and Polysorbate 80. Most are available as a certified vegan product with kosher and/or Halal certification too.
In biological research, polysorbates find extensive application as emulsifiers, solubilizers, stabilizers, and dispersants. They are commonly used in cell culture media, protein and antibody formulations, and drug delivery systems. Polysorbates aid in enhancing the solubility and stability of hydrophobic compounds, such as lipids, vitamins, and certain drugs, by forming micelles or emulsions. They also help prevent protein aggregation and improve the stability of biologics during storage and transportation.
Polysorbates are widely employed in the food industry as food additives and emulsifiers. They are used in a variety of food products, including baked goods, ice cream, margarine, dressings, and beverages. Polysorbates act as emulsifiers, enabling the mixing of water and oil-based ingredients, preventing separation, and improving texture and consistency. They also contribute to the stabilization of foams, preventing collapse and increasing the shelf life of aerated food products.
Due to their nonionic nature, polysorbates are considered safe for consumption and have been approved by regulatory agencies for use in food and pharmaceutical applications. They possess low toxicity and are generally well-tolerated by humans.
In summary, polysorbates play a crucial role in biological research and the food industry. Their ability to enhance solubility, stability, and emulsification properties makes them valuable additives in various applications. Whether it is in formulating pharmaceuticals or improving the quality and texture of food products, polysorbates provide effective solutions for a wide range of industries.
