Chromogenic substrate for β-glucuronidase. The chromogenic substrate X-gluc is used in a variety of applications for detection of β-glucuronidase enzyme. This compound has been used since late 1960 in plant tissue sections. Because of the localized color which X-gluc produces upon reduction, it is extremely useful in identifying gene presence within most cell types. Recent applications of this product include its use in the rapid detection of GUS (E. coli β-glucuronidase) gene fusion marker in plants. X-Gluc has also been reported applications in detection of E. coli in food samples such as meat, dairy products, and shellfish.
This chemical has clinical applications in the assessment of urinary infections by detection of the presence of E. coli. X-gluc has gained international acceptance as highly accurate test for the presence of E. coli in potable water sample thereby greatly reducing false positive and negative found with traditional methods.
