Irreversible inhibitor of thrombin and other serine proteases (e.g. chymotrypsin, kallikrein, plasmin, proteinase K, trypsin). Inhibits by acylation of the active site of the enzyme. AEBSF is water-soluble and much less toxic than PMSF and DFP.

Aqueous solutions are stable between pH 5-6; limited stability above pH 7.5.
